FED-UP ASTON VILLA fans have named flop Mathieu Berson their Player of the Year — even though he has not played all season, writes JANINE SELF

Boss David O’Leary paid Nantes £2million for the French midfielder in August 2004 but loaned him out to Auxerre last summer after just 13 appearances.

But Berson, 26, has become a star there and is now challenging for a place in France’s squad.

The idea to nominate Berson was thought up by a fans’ website.

Mike McKearnen, who saw Villa win the 1982 European Cup when he was 14, said: “O’Leary’s signings have been appalling and his attitude to fans has been a disgrace. We need a new manager.”

According to The Sun this morning supporters have named Mathieu Berson player of the season, despite not playing for Aston Villa this season.

Berson, considered by some before joining Aston Villa as the next Zidane has played so well this season he is on the verge of making the French squad for the World Cup but he's not good enough to play in a David O'Leary team.

O'Leary said Berson was homesick but Berson was quick to respond last season saying "I'm not homesick, I like it here and I've settled down."

Should Berson be awarded the supporters player of the year award? Well, his name should be down on the list to pick from because technically he is an Aston Villa player but whoever decides what names go down on the list didn't include it. It would have been quite embarrassing had he won, but they wouldn't have told us.
