Kenya: Lama Advises Star Oliech to Concentrate On Only Football

September 2, 2006
Posted to the web September 2, 2006

Harambee Stars' coach Bernard Lama has told star striker Dennis Oliech to sort out his personal life and focus on his career as a footballer.

Lama said Oliech had so many external distractions which were affecting his concentration on his career and advised him to clean his life as soon as possible for the benefit of his future as a footballer.

"Dennis has many problems in his life and he has to clean his personal life if he wants to play football with concentration and achieve much. But it will be difficult for him as he tries to mix the two," said Lama.

"We can help him and we are going to do that because he is a very good player but he has to show that he wants to keep away from such personal distractions and concentrate on his football."

Lama said Oliech is still a young boy who needed serious guidance lest he messes his career before he achieves his ultimate dream of playing at the top level. "He has just started at Nantes (in the French League), he is not playing much and he needs to work hard, he needs concentration and tranquility in his life.

"What is happening now is not too good for him. I have told him he needs to clean his life," said Lama of the former Mathare United striker who stands out as the best ever paid Kenyan footballer after his move from Al Arabi in Qatar to French former champions side FC Nantes in January.

Oliech, 23, has been in the news for positive and not so positive reasons earning him such tags as "Dennis the Menace," while other circles refer to him as the enfant terrible of Kenya's football.

But Lama said save for the external distractions affecting his personal life, Oliech was a great player with a great future.

Oliech arrived in the country on Monday to a warm reception from among others a young lady and her two year-old son who Oliech said was his son Miguel. In June, Oliech hit the headlines with reports that he had been engaged in a brawl which led to him being admitted at a Nairobi hospital, but the player's brother-cum-manager Nixon Onywanda said the media and the public were peddling falsehoods about his brother who had been injured while playing in an off season game.

This came just a few months after he had hit a newspaper photographer who took pictures of him with a girlfriend at a Mombasa pub while Harambee Stars were playing Tunisia. Oliech had refused to join the camp demanding to be refunded air ticket cash and unpaid allowances. He had caused a stir at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport earlier when the team was travelling to Guinea to play in a World Cup cum Nations Cup match and refused to travel with the team. Efforts by Kenya Football Federation chairman Alfred Sambu to plead with him to join the team did not bear fruits.

Yesterday, Lama said he had had a serious chat with Oliech and they had come to some understanding

Kenya: Celebrity Lifestyle for Oliech

Nairobi

Kenyan soccer superstar Dennis Oliech lives like a real celebrity in France. He drives a posh car and lives in an expansive house. Oliech talks to Pulse on his lifestyle and sheds light on his love life.

When temperamental FC Nantes striker Dennis Oliech arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday morning, a number of people were waiting to welcome him home. Among them were his girlfriend Beatrice Wanjiku and their two-year-old son Miguel. Dressed in a grey blazer and blue jeans, the striker was in a jovial mood as he went through Customs. Once cleared, he headed straight for Beatrice, who was in a blue jean-suit, and put his arms around her. He then picked up Miguel who cried: "Daddy! Daddy!" At that moment he also became aware that a couple of Pulse paps were also at the airport waiting for him.

"Leo Pulse wamepata story," he said, wryly admitting that he had been Caught Out.

Nicknamed Dennis the Menace by some, Oliech has been described as a true prima donna with lots of cash and a stormy love life to match. He drives the latest two-door state-of-the-art BMW (for which he paid -45,000, about Sh4 million) and lives in a leafy Paris suburb in a five-bedroomed house valued at -400,000 (Sh37 million). With beautiful women's names and rumours of scandal popping up whenever his name is mentioned, his life seems to follow Biggie Smalls' dictum 'More money, more problems'. The latest of these was the claim by artiste Meg C, an ex-girlfriend, that she was carrying his lovechild.

Oliech has vigorously denied this claim and took the opportunity to clear up a few other allegations that have been swirling around him.

As he talked to our paps, Beatrice Wanjiku pushed the airport trolley containing his huge suitcases towards his Toyota Celica, which she, her son and a driver had come to the airport in.

"I'm glad to be back in Kenya," Oliech enthused before trying to lay to rest allegations that he is a womaniser. In the last two years alone, he has been linked with a string of women including Meg C, Cecilia Mwangi (a former Miss Kenya), Ruksan (also a former beauty queen) and Nairobi socialite Sision among others.

Oliech admits to hanging out with Cecilia Mwangi but says that they are not an item.

"We met a couple of times," he says. "Never been an item." The beauty queen, who is currently in Ghana, is said to have kept in touch with Oliech while he was in France by phone and email. The two reportedly went out several times and at some point were assumed to be a couple. The former Miss Kenya was previously linked to dancer Kanda King and, more recently, to TV presenter Papa Siro.

As for Ruksan, who is married with two children, he says that although they are close, they are "just good friends". "We met during the East Africa Motor Show last year and we still communicate," he says. "(But) we are not lovers."

Oliech and Ruksan do find time to go clubbing together. Ruksan also insists that their relationship is based on friendship.

"I was with my kids at the time (we first met)," she recalls. "After a brief chat, we exchanged contacts." She says that she didn't see it as a big deal since many other people exchanged contacts with the superstar. "It's a normal thing to socialise, hence my decision to (give him) my number." Ruksan admits that it's no secret that Oliech has a weakness for beautiful women. "I made it clear to him that there would be no such thing as a relationship (between us)," she adds.

Oliech has kept in touch and even given Ruksan and her two children FC Nantes replica jerseys.

"I brought her (the replica jerseys) once, just like I have done for many other people," he says. "It means nothing." As for allegations that he was injured in a fight over her in Florida 2000 (a story that received much media coverage), Oliech says: "I was never there and did not fight with anybody over her. It is all a lie. Those saying otherwise are making it all up." He insists the injuries he had around that time were sustained in a soccer match.

Whatever the case, a source recently revealed to Pulse that Oliech's friendship with the model has created trouble with even other girls. Ruksan confirms this report and says she had an unpleasant confrontation with Meg C at the Razorous Club in Westlands. Oliech, she says, had called her one weekend while she was there with her friends and joined them later for a few drinks. Shortly after he arrived, Meg C suddenly showed up accompanied by a tall dark lady.

"It was as if she had been keeping track of my movements probably after coming into the conclusion that I was her rival," Ruksan says. She claims that Meg C began to create a scene forcing her and her crew to make an impromptu exit.
